Storm Damage Roof Repair in New York

After a storm, the order of operations matters: document first, protect second, repair third. Removing shingles before they have been photographed destroys the evidence a claim depends on.

Storm Damage Roof Repair work in New York, in practice

New York roofs take a specific kind of beating. In this region, ice dams at the eaves are the classic failure mode — meltwater backs up under the shingles and shows up as a ceiling stain two rooms away. That shapes what we find on inspection more than anything else: damage concentrated at the details — flashings, penetrations, valleys, ridges and the perimeter — rather than evenly across the field of the roof.

nor’easters bring sideways rain that drives into flashing joints and dormer walls On top of that, dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter work nails loose, open seams and crack old flashing

summer heat is milder, but UV still dries out and curls 3-tab shingles by the 18-year mark.

The housing stock matters too. Across New York, most stock was built either side of the middle of the last century, and a lot of it has had at least one re-roof already. Roofs on that stock tend to age in clusters, which is why a single storm event can produce years of concentrated roofing work in one neighbourhood and none two streets over.

Why storm damage is not a one-size job here

Storm damage rarely looks dramatic from the driveway. Hail bruises a shingle mat without removing it, wind creases tabs and opens sealant lines, and wind-driven rain drives into details that have held for years. Meanwhile the interior damage — a ceiling stain, damp insulation — may not appear for days.

We assess storm damage across the whole roof, document it slope by slope in the form an adjuster expects, protect anything that is actively leaking, and only then repair. If the damage is not claimable, we will say so before you open a claim.

What storm damage costs in New York

If the damage is claimable, the cost structure is between you and your insurer: deductible plus any non-covered items such as upgrades, code-required items or matching improvements. Cash repairs on storm-damaged roofs typically run from a few hundred dollars for a targeted detail up to a full slope re-roof in the low thousands.

Be wary of any contractor who offers to waive your deductible, asks you to sign a document assigning your claim benefits without explanation, or cannot itemise the scope. Those are the three patterns that most often go wrong for homeowners.

Insurance note for New York: Ice dam damage is often covered as a sudden event, but long-term seepage from neglected maintenance usually is not. Photographs of the ice build-up and the interior damage help establish when it happened. We will tell you honestly whether what we see looks claimable before you open a claim — and we do not charge for that assessment.

Material guidance for this climate

The two details that matter more than shingle brand here are ice-and-water shield along the eaves and valleys, and correct attic insulation and ventilation to stop ice dams forming in the first place. Architectural shingles outperform 3-tab on every metric.
